Musk ox success: Striking a bullish balance

Two musk ox bulls engage in a butting contest to determine dominance of a herd north of Nome. Since 1980, the musk ox population on the Seward Peninsula has ballooned from 104 to nearly 3,000.

They're slow-footed and bull-headed. When threatened, they huddle up. During breeding season, males charge one another and crack heads with such force the sound can sometimes be heard up to a mile away.

Taking down the big one

In the stillness of a muskeg, the faint scent of moose (a sweet, musky, fermented-leaflike odor) mingles with the fragrance of frost-ripened blueberries. Standing quietly in the cold autumn air, rifle slung over your shoulder, it’s easy to imagine a homecoming meal of tenderloin floured lightly and sauteed in butter. Indeed, such visions highlight your immediate purpose in life: You must find a moose.
