VALDEZ -- They weren't big -- neither the anglers nor the fish.
But 11-year-old Cole Lenart of Albert Lee, Minn., caught the biggest pink salmon of the day in the Kids Pink Salmon Derby in Valdez, which attracted some 200 young anglers on Saturday.
Lenart's 6.78-pound fish was the winner.
"We had no idea what to expect because we haven't done a kids derby for a long time," Valdez Fish Derbies committee member Debbie Yamakami said in a press release. "Based on the turnout, I'd say it was a good idea."
Other winners, all of whom took home new bikes, were:
Liam Kern of Anchorage, with a 5.26-pounder to win the division for 5- to 7-year-olds.
Annika Hansen of Seattle, whose 6.5-pounder took the 8-to-10 age group.
Joshua Curtis of Tok, who won the 14-to-16 age group with a 6.76-pounder.
