Ryan Sheehan of Anchorage put himself in position to pocket $5,000 Saturday by moving into second place in the 53rd annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby.
The derby ends today at noon.
Sheehan landed an 18.5-pounder at the Head of the Bay in Seward. He trails the leading weight of 18.57 held by Renee Wellington, who has led the derby since Monday.
Wellington got a scare Saturday when a teenage angler brought in a silver weighing 18.64 pounds, but she didn't buy a derby ticket. It was a pricey mistake.
The winner will take home $10,000, with second earning $5,000. Third place wins a trip for two to Costa Rica.
Saturday featured five changes in the top 10. In addition to Sheehan, the other newcomers were Daniel Williams of Nikiski, William Lallish of Anchorage, Randy Meyer of Phoenix and Michelle Vuylsteke of Sterling.
