Silvers showing in Whittier for derby
Whittier offers Southcentral's last salmon derby of the year and it's under way through Sept. 14. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game described Whittier silver fishing over the Labor Day weekend as "mixed. Some reports were of people catching their limits though most folks were getting skunked." But the run typically peaks later than others in the Sound. Fish have jumping around the harbor, and anglers venturing to Passage Canal have enjoyed some success. The entry fee is $5 a day, $25 a week. A jackpot for the heaviest fish will be awarded at the end of the season.
Bicentennial Park trails to be discussed
Discuss the trails and the future of more than 100 miles of multi-use trails and connectors in Far North Bicentennial Park, Anchorage's largest park, 6:15 p.m. Monday at the Campbell Creek Science Center. The park receives more than 1 million visitors each year, and trail user conflicts have increased, both in summer and winter.
The improvement project will examine all park trails to determine their condition and current use. Missing trail links and proposed amenities will be identified, and trail standards will be developed. Trail head and parking upgrades will be considered too. The result: a comprehensive trail project list.
