Papermaking

Explore biodiesel fuel

DETAILS: Biodiesel educator Will Taygan will demonstrate how to make any diesel petroleum-free. Participants will explore the science behind biodiesel and SVO (straight vegetable oil) systems, compare emissions, learn how to collect oil responsibly and make a test batch of biodiesel.

Learn about astronomy

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Eagle River Nature Center

DETAILS: An amateur astronomer will present a one-hour indoor program after which participants will head outside to view the night sky if it is clear. Bring your own binoculars or telescope or share the ones set up by astronomers. Children can earn a Junior Astronomer Certificate after attending six programs and completing "Star Notes."

Flying Wild Educator's Workshop

WHEN: 8:30 a.m. -noon Saturday

WHERE: Eagle River Nature Center

DETAILS: A national program of the Council for Environmental Education, Flying Wild focuses on migratory birds and is designed to inspire young people to discover more about conservation and the natural world. It provides teachers and educational tools and partnerships, encourages the integration of bird education and conservation activities into the school curriculum in an engaging, successful and academically purposeful manner. Chugach State Park Advisory Board

WHEN: Until Nov. 15

DETAILS: Chugach State Park is looking for park users to join its citizens advisory board. Five positions need to be filled. The board advises park administrators on policies and practices for the wildlife reserve. In general the board tries to improve communication between the public and park managers.

SKIING

Teach disabled to ski, snowboard

WHEN: 5:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Friday at Round Table Pizza in the Dimond Center (pizza provided); Saturday at Challenge Building in Girdwood.

DETAILS: Challenge Alaska Adaptive Ski and Snowboard School trains volunteers to teach people with disabilities how to ski and snowboard. Clinics and certification will be offered by experienced instructor. Volunteers can earn lift tickets or a season pass for service commitments. Challenge Alaska operates a building near Mount Alyeska. The rental shop is stocked with adaptive equipment to accommodate any disability. At our informal information meetings you'll get an overview, meet staff and volunteers, pick up a training schedule and get questions answered.

Name new Alyeska quad

DETAILS: To celebrate its new Chair 3, Alyeska Resort is sponsoring a contest among Alaska School District students to name its new quad chairlift. The winner will receive a 10-time powder pass, an overnight stay at the hotel and be honored as the first passenger at the Nov. 24 ribbon cutting. One entry per student.

Bear and Moose Training Meeting

'Be Snow Smart' presentation

Wilderness first responder course

WHEN: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. November 8-10 and November 14-16.

WHERE: Eagle River

DETAILS: Wilderness First Responder is a widely used standard for outdoor professionals, and graduates of the course earn wilderness medical associates certification valid for three years. Course covers anatomy and physiology, CPR, spine assessment, treatment of anaphylaxis and simple dislocations, plus short-term to multi-day patient care, evacuation decision-making, search and rescue, and the incident command system. At least three multi-casualty scenarios are included.

Randy Bridwell of Anchorage was the big winner at the Alaska Waterfowl Association's first money-raising raffle Oct. 18. Bridwell was the winner of Browning 12-gauge and 20-gauge Citori over-under shotguns.

The waterfowl association raffled off the shotguns as part of a continuing effort to fund wetlands protection.

Now in its 27th year, the association has helped protect thousands of acres of coastline and salt marsh in Alaska.

The organization is dedicated to protecting and acquiring lands for waterfowl habitat, informing and educating the public on the benefits of the preservation of waterfowl habitat and to inform and educate the public concerning safe and responsible hunting of waterfowl.
