Winter break countdown

It’s the second week of winter break! No more school, no more books, no more … things to do! YWCA inducts new Women of Achievement

The YWCA hosted the 19th annual Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon at Egan Civic and Convention Center on Dec. 10. With the slogan “Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women,” the award recognizes outstanding, successful women of Anchorage who have helped make a positive impact on society. The women are also recognized for being encouraging role models for young women.

Perfect Worlds's guide to local sledding spots

Well, the semester has passed, and finals are over, so naturally it's time for sledding. After all, few things are as cathartic as the rush of adrenaline that comes from an especially risky run. A joyful sound

Walk into the East High School band room on Monday afternoons, and you'll hear the sound of the nearly 100 young musicians assembled in the Anchorage Youth Symphony, one of the largest orchestral groups in the state. In the 1960s, AYS was organized to fulfill the need for an orchestra for the young musicians of Anchorage. It was originally a district-operated and funded program, but now it's an independent nonprofit.

Our energy future lies in renewable resources

High oil prices this summer were a wake-up call to the inadequacies of the United States' energy policy. Now that prices have fallen back to more reasonable levels, we cannot forget the hard lessons we learned this summer.

Civics lesson

Youth Vote is a project of the League of Women Voters and meant to be an ongoing campaign to educate and engage Alaska's youths in the political process. It is also an Anchorage School District social studies curriculum covering government and politics with levels ranging from elementary through high school.

Discovering the magnificent side of Chicago

Lured by tales of the Magnificent Mile and the Chicago Art Institute, my mother and I tagged along on one of my father's recent work trips to Chicago. Staying in the Fairmont Hotel, we were just diagonal to Trump Tower (still in the process of being resurrected) and one block from the heart of downtown.
