Bears

Two Kodiak bears at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center romp in the snow Tuesday, February 21, 2012. The warmer temperatures have them out and about, and the other 3 bears have been seen more these days as well. The two bears pictured are Taquoka (darker bear) and Shaguyik, both rescued from Kodiak Island over a year ago. The cubs are set to be transferred to a facility similar to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Sweden. This transfer will take place in June. The Center's operations have been hampered by the massive amounts of snow, but we are planning on opening this weekend for the first time in weeks.
