Sled Dog Rides Iditarod Headquarters

2011 Iditarod: Day 11 (Nome)

Iditarod musher Lance Mackey and Dale Morgan, of Nome, compete in the finals of the light weight class in the Breakers Bar arm wrestling competition at the end of the 2011 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Wednesday March 16, 2011. Morgan was first and Mackey was 2nd.

Lance Mackey finished in 16th place for the 2011 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Mushers continue to stream into the coastal town.

Iditarod drop bags sorted for shipping

Iditarod racers are required to get their checkpoint drop bags to the Air Land Transport facility in south Anchorage either Wednesday, February 16, or Thursday, February 17 for sorting and preparation for shipping to checkpoints along the trail. Some came by truck from Air Land's facility in Fairbanks. Racers are required to have 60 pounds of dog food at each of twenty different checkpoints says race marshall Mark Nordman. The drop bags also include the mushers' own food and other supplies. Sixty-two racers are signed up to start this year's Iditarod. The ceremonial start in Anchorage is Saturday, March 5.

Many Iditarod mushers brought their drop bags to the Air Land Transport facility in Anchorage on Wednesday, February 16, for sorting and preparation for shipping to checkpoints along the trail. Some came by truck from Air Land's facility in Fairbanks.

Heavy snow pounded Valdez and Cordova on January 6, 2012, after the town received 19.2 inches Thursday from the Prince William Sound blizzard, making for a season total of more than 20 feet. Meanwhile, Nome is having its worst cold spell since 1989.
