Anchorage's Kikkan Randall stretched her ski across the finish line and broke new ground for U.S. skiing today. Randall, 26, held off Finland's Pirjo Muranen in a photo finish in the Czech Republic to take silver in the world championship sprint, becoming the first US woman to win a world or Olympic medal in cross-country skiing.

Kikkan Randall 2007 World Championships

The United States' Kikkan Randall smiles after her victory in women's 1.2 km sprint free at the cross-country World Cup event in Demino some 350 km (219 miles) north of Moscow, Russia, Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007. Randall became the first U.S. woman and second American to win a World Cup cross country race Sunday when she defeated world sprint champion Astrid Jacobsen of Norway in the final meters of a 1.2-kilometer freestyle.
