Anchorage film festival gets grant

The just-completed Anchorage International Film Festival has been awarded a $6,000 grant from the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that hands out the Oscars every year.

Since the movie "Everybody Loves Whales" started shooting in town this fall, it seems everyone has film fever. Whether it's spotting Ted Danson at a restaurant or standing next to Drew Barrymore at First Tap, Anchorage residents have had a closer connection to the silver screen.

Sanders stars in AIFF film

2010 was a big year for former Alaskan Cedric Sanders. The East High School graduate starred in "The Least Among You," which was released on DVD in August. The young actor starred opposite Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett, Jr., and the role earned Sanders the Best Actor Award at this year's San Diego Black Film Festival. After that he made a brief appearance in the "The Social Network," the box office smash hit about the founders of Facebook.

Local lens: 'How to Survive'

Written and directed by Ronald Jerry and shot on location on Kodiak Island, the feature-length movie follows four adventurers camping in a remote area. The travelers reached their destination via floatplane, but when the plane doesn't return to pick them up, they're forced to find their way back through the island's backcountry.

Local lens: 'The Yu'pik Way'

Directed by Beth Edwards, the documentary provides a portrait of the Southwest Alaska village Hooper Bay, also known as Naparyarmiut. The film features interviews with Yu'pik elders as they attempt to hold on to traditional ways of life and the village's younger and increasingly Western-influenced population.

The Anchorage International Film Festival begins on Dec. 3, and we've been highlighting some of the local films screening in the competition. Entered in both the documentary and local Snowdance categories is "Mush: The Movie."

Local lens: 'The Beekeepers'

As we noted last week, the Anchorage International Film Festival's official selections are listed on their website. This week the pre-screening committee has chosen which movies in those selections will also enter the jury process, making them eligible for the film fest's awards for best feature, best documentary, best short film and so on. The website now also includes this handy page, with trailors and info on each of the movies screening between Dec. 3 and Dec. 16.

Anchorage International Film Festival opens Friday

A Life Ascending will be part of the Anchorage International Film Fest, which starts Dec. 3, 2010 at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub.

Many Alaskans are familiar with the tale of Hig Higman and wife Erin McKittrick walking, paddling and skiing from Seattle to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula -- an unprecedented trek through some of the most rugged and pristine terrain in North America. At the Anchorage International Film Festival, which opens Friday, Alaskans will be able to see the trip unfold for the first time.
