Back from picking up a $50,000 Whiting Writers' Award and launching her first book at an event in New York, poet Joan Kane will read from her work starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday night at the Alaska Native Arts Foundation gallery, 500 W. 6th Ave. It will be the Anchorage author's first Alaskan appearance since receiving the prestigious national prize on Oct. 28.

The importance of preserving the feeling was one reason the performance was booked at UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium, despite the fact that demand would likely surpass the venue's 850 seats, according to Zac Clark, concert board coordinator for the University of Alaska Anchorage.
