Playwright Michael Weller is expected to be on hand when the company opens its run of his "The Ballad of Soapy Smith," based on the Gold Rush antics of Alaska's most notorious con artist. Far from a spoof or cookie-cutter villain, Weller depicts Jefferson Randolph Smith as a bona-fide protagonist, a man struggling for the respect of upstanding folks -- and himself -- as he dreams of reinventing and redeeming his life with a fresh start in the Great Land. We can all sympathize. Erick Hayden has the title role. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursdays to Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through March 1 at the Off Center Playhouse, 413 D St. Tickets are $15 to $17.50.

Tearful testimony to Korean War's toll
"M*A*S*H" reruns notwithstanding, the Korean War wasn't much fun for anyone involved. Anchorage artist Esther Hong's installation titled "Lachrymatory" at UAA's Kimura Gallery is a statement about war in general but more particularly the effect that this particular war had on her family, including her grandmother, now 90, who is featured in painting and on video. The show will remain through March 6. Bring tissues.

The bride wears blood in the Met's big-screen 'Lucia'
We've been waiting all season for this high-def, big-screen presentation of "Lucia di Lammermoor," in which Russian diva Anna Netrebko belts out her angst as an unwilling bride, slashes her husband to death on his wedding bed and then goes more than a little bit crazy. Or maybe she was crazy before the slashing. At any rate, I'll be crazy to miss this opportunity to catch this soprano in action. The live performance filmed at the Metropolitan Opera this month will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Century 16. Tickets are $22.
