DANCE

From the avant-garde to stylish

The Dance Ensemble from the University of Alaska Anchorage's Theatre and Dance Department will perform choreography by guest artist Marianne Kim at its dance concert this month.

Kim's absurdist piece finds inspiration from Japanese butoh dance and involves multimedia elements like those in previous works, some of which have appeared internationally. She teaches interdisciplinary art and performance at Arizona State University.

The ensemble will also perform a stylish piece called "Hips Sway, Shoulders Whisper" by Brian Jeffery and several works by students in the ensemble, including one with an original score.

The concert run continues at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 6 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 16 at the Harper Studio Theatre in the UAA Fine Arts Building. Tickets are $10, $8 for UAA students, through the UAA Theatre Box Office (786-4TIX). Parking is free.

VISUAL ARTS

No Big Heads in these self-portraits

Big egos often make self-portraits hard to stomach, but the annual No Big Heads Self Portrait Exhibition nips the problem in the bud by limiting size while embracing all media.

Now in its 22nd year, the group show at the University of Alaska Anchorage promises work ranging from paintings to multimedia sculptural pieces.

Steven Assael, the juror for this year's show, uses classical methods in his figurative paintings and drawings, often using gritty detail that appears almost photographic. He teaches art at the Pratt Institute in New York City and has been featured in Art in America magazine. Find out more about him at www.stevenassael.com.

No Big Heads continues until Nov. 20 at the UAA Student Union Gallery. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.

PERFORMANCE ART

'20th Century Man' performs tonight

When the 20th century man poses the question, "What would you do with a time machine?" he really wants to explore what it means to live here now while aware of history in the making. Gizmos mean something, for sure, but not nearly as much as the oldest inquiries in the book.

So, he wonders, "Would you go find Hitler, say, 'Adolf, chill. Forget world domination. You've got the arts grant.' "

The serious and hilarious do the tango in this one-man monologue to live violins. B. Hutton will perform "20th Century Man Pt. 2" tonight at the MTS Gallery, 3142 Mountain View Drive. Doors open at 7 p.m. with refreshments by Tap Root Cafe. The performance starts at 8 p.m. Go the gallery's unauthorized Web site for details, mtsgallery.wordpress.com.
