MUSEUM
'Near Water' features woodcut prints, mosaics
Color woodcut prints, relief panels and glass mosaic pieces inhabit Sara Tabbert's solo show, "Near Water," at the Anchorage Museum.
"Although this is an exhibition about water, it still contains an awful lot of wood," Tabbert wrote in her artist statement. "At the same time, pieces made from collaged layers of printed material as well as the layering in my prints themselves have allowed me to say some things about the depth, transparency and motion of water."
Going even further, she uses glass to portray "some of the unique qualities of color and light found in and around water."
Her fascination with water rises from a life in Fairbanks and an art residency in Dawson City, Yukon, a river town if ever there was one. Though Tabbert intends to dive deeper into her subject after her show opens, she also wants to take time off to do more skijor training with her dogs.
In the meantime, she'll be at the show's opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the museum, 121 W. Seventh Ave. (www.anchorage museum.org). See more of her work at www.saratabbert.com.

MUSIC
Young cast performs 'Fiddler on the Roof'
Tradition quivers upon the bowstring of change in the tried-and-true musical "Fiddler on the Roof," but this month's production by Alaska Theatre of Youth includes only youths in a cast of 30 actors from 8 to 18 years old.
Marriages, arguments and hardships remain, but the young actors come from various religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds as they enact the story of Tevye and his five daughters, a Jewish family caught under czarist rule.
ATY strives to stay true to its "kids first" casting policy, said director Christian Heppinstall, even when doing mature plays like "Fiddler," which opened on Broadway in 1965.
The 70-minute production includes choreography by Leslie Ward and music direction by Oliver Siemens. Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 14 at the Sydney Laurence Theatre. Tickets are $15 (www.centertix.net, 263-2797).
