Party flush with slush and silliness

The Slush Cup is the Marcia Brady of Alyeska Resort's Spring Carnival -- the wacky competition steals all the attention. And why shouldn't it?
Skiers and snowboarders race down a half-mile course that ends with a ride across (or plummet into) a goose-bump-inducing pond of slush. As if the potential for a nasty cold dunk isn't amusing enough, participants do it all in some screwy costumes. Past get-ups have included Richard Simmons, Saddam Hussein, the Hamburgler, Trojanman and the ever-popular Streaker.
However, Sunday's Slush Cup at 4 p.m. is just one of more than a dozen events Saturday and Sunday at the Girdwood resort -- most are free. Here are a few more worth checking out around Alyeska:
Human Sled Dog Race, 1:30 p.m. Sunday: People pull a sled carrying their teammates through an obstacle course. Humiliating and sweaty for them, fun for us.
Kids' stuff: Kids who enter the Little Tikes Race (noon Sunday) get free ice cream whether they make it down the slalom course upright on their skis or skidding on their bums. A newly expanded Fun Zone (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) offers indoor face painting, an egg toss, pie-eating contest and other kid-friendly highjinks.
Downhill Dummy Race, 4 p.m. Sunday: Costumed mannequins get shoved down a hill. Slightly disturbing, but funny.
Idiotswimacross, 3:55 p.m. Sunday: The name says it all: Idiots sign up to take an icy plunge in the Slush Cup pond. The shrinkage warning goes without saying.
