U.S. Senate candidate Sullivan claims big 4Q fundraising in Alaska campaign

Dan Sullivan, the former natural resources commissioner and attorney general for the State of Alaska, has had a lucrative three months since the launch of his official U.S. Senate campaign in October. The former White House staffer and Assistant Secretary of State has raised more than $1.2 million thus far, according to a press release from his campaign early Tuesday.

Jan. 15 marks the deadline for federal candidates to report their finances for the last three months of 2013 to the Federal Elections Commission. A full fourth-quarter report for Sullivan was not available through the FEC's online portal on Tuesday morning. The same was true for his Republican primary challengers -- current Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and returning contender Joe Miller -- as well as incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Begich.

The quick infusion of cash puts Sullivan in the game financially with his opponents after becoming the most recent major Republican contender to announce his candidacy. Treadwell had raised about $370,000 through the third quarter of 2013, with about $155,000 cash on hand. Begich's most recent report showed the Democrat with $2.4 million on hand. Miller, a tea-party-backed Republican who beat Republican Lisa Murkowski in 2010 in the state's primary but lost to a write-in campaign from her in the general election, had $287,000 on hand for the same time frame.
