Justin Kaufmann drilled three 3-pointers in the final three minutes Monday to lift West to a 79-74 thriller in the opening round of the Whataburger Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.
The win came against Mansfield Summit of Arlington, Texas, and moves the Eagles into a game today against North Crowley, the reigning Class 5A state champion in Texas.
Kaufmann finished with 14 points and was joined in double figures by Devon Bookert (17 points), Ethan Zinck (16) and Mike Russell (13).
In Phoenix, the Service Cougars are 0-2 in the Cactus Jam tournament after losses to a pair of Seattle teams. Service lost 68-32 to Skyline and 47-37 to Lake Washington.
Wasilla rolls in Hawaii
Six players hit double figures Monday to power Wasilla to a 72-48 victory over Hili, Hawaii, a win that sends the Warriors to the consolation finals in the 16-team Merv Lopes Holiday Classic in Honolulu.
Adrese Lavern, Chris Edwards, Braydon Kuiper, Cody Pfiefer, Tillerman Kroon and John Knowles all scored in double digits for Wasilla, which is 2-1 in the tournament and plays its final game today.
