Naturally, Matt Carle and Nate Thompson would prefer to be unavailable to Team USA for the World Championships because they had some Stanley Cup playoff work ahead of them.
But with their Tampa Bay Lightning eliminated from making the postseason, the two NHL skaters from Anchorage still have some hockey to play next month.
Carle, 28, and Thompson, 28, today were named to Team USA for the World Championships May 3-19 in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden.
Carle, a defenseman, owns 4-17--21 totals and an even rating in 46 games, and he owns 517 NHL regular-season games on his resume.
Thompson, who skated for Team USA last season in the World Championships (so did Anchorage winger Joey Crabb, who like Thompson started this season with the Alaska Aces because of the NHL lockout), owns 7-8--15 and -1 totals in 43 games. Thompson has played 308 NHL regular-season games.
