Anchorage runner Jake Moe, 25, paced a contingent of 34 Alaskans who finished the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, running 2 hours, 35 minutes, 54 seconds to place 134th among more than 33,000 finishers in what is considered one of America's fastest marathons. Jennifer Payne, 38, also of Anchorage, led the Alaska women by running 3:34:33.
Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya took the race in 2:05:41, while Liliya Shobukhova of Russia captured the women's title in 2:25:56.
Earlier this summer, Moe finished seventh in June's Mayor's Marathon, but Sunday he cut nearly 12 minutes off his time on the rugged Mayor's course that includes some backcountry running. Doing that allowed him to easily top Jeff Heuseveldt, who finished second (2:41:23) among the Alaskans in Chicago. Heuseveldt was fifth in the Mayor's Marathon.
Moe is the former Anchorage Christian Schools standout who won the 2002 small-schools cross-country running state championship.
