ALEKNAGIK -- A 62-year-old man in a Western Alaska village died late Friday after he fell or lay down in a roadway and was run over by a pickup, Alaska State Troopers said.
Johnnie Westcoast of Aleknagik, near Dillingham, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, troopers said.
Their preliminary investigation showed he had been drinking.
Westcoast was walking from a friend's house back to his own when he ended up on the ground on Aleknagik Lake Road at about mile 16.5.
Minutes later, he was hit by a truck driven by Christopher Olson, 30, troopers said. It was snowing and visibility was poor. The truck was impounded.
The investigation is continuing, troopers said. An autopsy will be performed in Anchorage.
