Anchorage's two-time Olympian Kikkan Randall polished off her sweep of the national championship races in cross-country skiing this afternoon with a win in the classical-style sprint at Kincaid Park. Her four-race sweep upped her total of national championships to 15.

With the best skiers in the United States competing for Olympic team positions at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships, an upstart from Fairbanks made a bid for a podium finish with the best race of his life Wednesday.

Anchorage skiers rang up a banner day today in the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships at Kincaid Park. Two-time Olympian Kikkan Randall won the 20-K classic race in the morning, putting her one sprint away from a four-race nationals sweep. James Southam won the 30-K men's race this afternoon.

Service senior Scott Patterson, a two-time state Skimeister, finished 16th in Monday’s 15-K, leaving national team skiers and former Olympian Andrew Johnson in his wake.

When 18-year-old Tyler Kornfield crossed the finish line in 60th place on Monday in the men's 15-kilometer freestyle race at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships, some might have expected the former Service High skier to be all glum.

With the Olympics clearly in their future, Kikkan Randall and Kris Freeman could afford to go out conservatively in Monday's freestyle races at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships at Kincaid Park. With the Olympics a question mark in his future, James Southam didn't want to risk a slow start.

Randall wins again at US ski championships

Two-time Olympian Kikkan Randall of Anchorage earned her 12th national title by winning the women's 10-K freestyle event during the second day of the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships being held at Kincaid Park on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.  It was Randall's second title at the championships.

Before a cheering hometown crowd, Kikkan Randall won the 10-kilometer freestyle race at Kincaid Park today, her second title at the 2010 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships. Kris Freeman of New Hampshire captured his 13th national championship by winning the 15-kilometer men's freestyle race.

After competing Saturday in the sprint race -- an event that made its Olympic debut in 2002 -- racers go old-school today. The event is the 15 kilometers (for men) and 10 kilometers (for women) freestyle.

The weather cooperated, the fans showed up in droves and the hometown hero came through with flying colors on the opening day of the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships.

Randall wins women's freestyle sprint

Kikkan Randall of Anchorage, who next month heads to her third Winter Olympics, kicked off the U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships in style this afternoon, winning the senior women's freestyle sprint title on the opening day of the event at Kincaid Park.
