PHOTOS: Best photos of 2013 from Alaska Dispatch

2013 was a year of adventure. From downtown Anchorage to places as far afield as Iceland, Alaska Dispatch traveled far and wide to bring back the stories and photos that matter.

This slideshow, presented chronologically, highlights just a few of the places we've gone. It begins with photos from our Anchorage backyard, on the slopes of Alyeska Resort, where ski patrollers practice with their rescue dogs.

Next we have a few photos from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. This entire slideshow could be filled exclusively with photos from The Last Great Race, so if you'd like to see more, check out our best of the Iditarod photos page.

On the way back from the Iditarod finish in Nome, we took a detour out into the Bering Sea to visit the small community of Diomede and the ghost town of King Island -- and along the way we happened upon a few hundred walrus hauled out on the sea ice.

Back in Southcentral Alaska, we froze our noses photographing one of the best northern lights shows in years. In case you missed it, here's a time lapse video of the aurora from that night.

In the spring and early summer we made a few trips into the heart of Alaska, from the old railroad town of Curry to the mountaineering basecamp on Denali's Kahiltna glacier.

Fourth of July found us in Seward for the Mt. Marathon race, and as school started in late August, we checked in on the students in Galena, where spring floods destroyed much of the town. Wrapping up the summer we took a road trip north, heading up the Glenn Highway to Fairbanks, Tok and Chicken.

In October we spent a week with our neighbor on the Arctic Circle, Iceland. The small island country has many similarities to Alaska, with gorgeous glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls.

Coming full circle, we ended our year back in Southcentral Alaska, where we witnessed a gorgeous beaver moon rise above Anchorage and the first day of skiing at Alyeska.
