On May 18, thousands of Anchorage residents ditched their cars and rode to work in two-wheeled style, celebrating the eighth Annual Bike to Work Day. Friends and co-workers teamed up, commuting by bicycle, along the way stopping to enjoy coffee and treats provided at some of the dozen or so snack stations set up around town.

At Thompson & Company's station in downtown Anchorage at 9th Avenue and E Street, Kaladi Brothers Coffee was on hand with free coffee, and every few minutes Thompson would offer goodies to the first to correctly answer an Alaska-themed trivia question. Many bike commuters wore costumes, and some even rode by while dressed in business suits.

While the excellent weather was certainly a factor encouraging participation this year, it may have been the aroma of free bacon that kept the crowds coming at the Spenard Roadhouse's station at Chester Creek and the Seward Highway. By the time Anchorage assemblywoman Jennifer Johnston showed up, shortly after 8:30 a.m., having just biked 10 miles from her hillside home, the bacon was all gone.
