Family fun, Alaska tradition at 12th annual Denali Park WinterFest

The 12th annual Denali National Park WinterFest was blessed with great weather as folks from the area gathered to take advantage of a fun-filled winter day in one of America's largest, most famous and most beautiful national parks. Activities included a snow sculpturing contest, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, along with indoor activities provided by the National Park Service.

The day started with a community pancake feed fundraiser put on by the Tri-Valley Junior High class, which offered hearty breakfast fuel to kick-off the day's activities.

Day events in Healy involved a full schedule of hockey games, including a tournament that pitted Healy's team against other teams from Fairbanks.

Meanwhile, down the road in the park, everyone was enjoying themselves in true Alaskan tradition. Crowds gathered to watch as Larry Moen created an ice sculpture with help from anyone who was willing. At the same time, families were engaged in a snow sculpturing contest, with the National Park Service providing all the requisite tools. Snow shoes also were available from the park service for those who wanted to venture out in the wild.
