After posting a number of top-five finishes this summer, Lia Slemons ascended to number one Saturday by winning the women's title at the Bear Paw Classic 5-K race.
The race is a central part of the annual Bear Paw Festival in Eagle River, and by winning, Slemons became a bit of a hometown hero -- she is a 1998 graduate of Chugiak High.
Jake Moe led a group of three men who finished in less than 16 minutes. The winner of April's Heart Run, Moe finished in 15:11.5 to beat Forest Tarbath (15:22.6) and defending champion Tynan Jordan (15:44.7).
The race attracted nearly 900 runners -- 515 women and 310 men.
Following the race, the 30th Annual Bear Paw Festival continued with rides, games, food and performances.
