Photos: AIDS Memorial Quilt in Anchorage

Nine blocks of the AIDS Memorial Quilt make a brief appearance Tuesday evening, Dec. 1, 2015, at the Anchorage Museum. The blocks, featuring 72 3-foot by 6-foot panels in memory of AIDS victims, were displayed at a gathering organized by Four A's in recognition of World AIDS Day.

More than 48,000 panels have been created to remember AIDS victims, and the nine blocks on view included 12 panels featuring Alaskans. "I hope what people take away from this is the humanity that was lost," said Darl Schaaff, who emphasized that AIDS still claims lives overseas, especially in Africa.

"People forget. That's the hardest part. They forget how dangerous it is. That's what scares me," Schaaff said.

Two additional will remain on view Wednesday at the Alaska Heritage Museum at the main Wells Fargo office in Midtown.
