The majority of the Anchorage School District's 48,000 students were back in the classroom on Wednesday, Aug. 20, as the school year began for second through 12th graders.

William Tyson and Creekside Park elementary schools were among the more than 100 Anchorage-area schools that rang in the new school year Wednesday morning. 

Students in preschool, kindergarten and first grade get a weeklong reprieve; classes for those students will start Aug. 27.
