A grass fire reported Monday afternoon on the Kenai Peninsula grew rapidly through the afternoon, burning six structures and prompting an evacuation order covering hundreds of homes in the Sterling area, emergency officials said.

The fire, reported just before 2 p.m. Monday, grew 1,200 acres within an eight-hour span, said Division of Forestry spokesperson Terry Anderson. Six structures were lost in the fire, with homes among them, Anderson said.

By midday Tuesday, the fire was estimated at 1,500 acres. Emergency officials were asking residents in the Kenai Keys subdivision to evacuate, wrote Brenda Ahlberg, public information officer with the Kenai Peninsula Borough. An updated fire map showed the fire encompassing a portion of Kenai Keys Road.
