Photos: DeeDee Jonrowe arrives in Rohn after tumultuous trip through Dalzell Gorge

DeeDee Jonrowe, a musher from Willow and a three-decade Iditarod veteran, scratched from this year's race on Tuesday morning following a rough ride through the Dalzell Gorge between the checkpoints of Rainy Pass and Rohn. According to Alaska Dispatch photographer Loren Holmes, DeeDee said that she had lost her team three teams through the gorge, which is a challenging stretch of trail even in years where there's plenty of snow. But 2014's trail so far has been completely snowless at points, battering mushers and sleds alike.

Jonrowe has completed 29 Iditarods, and is frequently one of the first 10 mushers to pass under the burled arch in Nome at the end of the grueling sled dog race. She made the decision to scratch in Rohn after arriving Monday evening and spending the night.
