Photos: Firefighters remember 9/11

Firefighters from across Alaska gathered on the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to remember those who have died in the line of duty.

A large American flag hung between two fire engine ladders overlooking the Alaska Fallen Firefighter Memorial, while approximately 100 people gathered below for the ceremony.

Many of those gathered were firefighters in full dress, there to honor their fallen comrades. But a few seats in the front row were filled with civilians, the family of Anchorage Fire Department Sr. Capt. Jeff Bayless.

Bayless died in early March this year during a training exercise. Today, a plaque with his name was affixed to the wall of the memorial, alongside every other Alaska firefighter to die in the line of duty.
