Photos: Heavy rain causes landslides and sinkhole in Sitka

In Sitka, heavy rains on Tuesday caused landslides and at least one sinkhole to form in the Southeast Alaska community, Sitka Police Department Chief Sheldon Schmitt said.

The first call about a landslide came in at 9:41 a.m. Tuesday, and emergency responders have been primarily focused on a landslide near Kramer Avenue, a couple of miles outside Sitka, Schmitt said.

"This new development area, up on Kramer Avenue, there are new houses being built and (the landslide) came down the mountain, across the road and hit the houses below," Schmitt said. "A construction crew and city worker were all in the area and we haven't located them yet."
