Photos: Last fish leave shuttered Fort Rich hatchery

Alaska Department of Fish and Game workers decommissioned the Fort Richardson State Fish Hatchery on Friday, Nov. 21.

Fish and Game drained the tanks and raceways of water at the hatchery after the last fish, a group of Arctic char, was used to stock Little Campbell Lake earlier in the day.

The hatchery on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was built in 1958 by the U.S. Army to provide fish for the post lakes. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game became involved with the hatchery in the early 1960s. The hatchery was rebuilt and expanded with construction completed in 1984. The facility produced Arctic char, Arctic grayling, rainbow trout, king salmon and coho salmon to stock 100 lakes and 11 streams.
