K Street Eats opened for the first time on Monday, May 2, 2016, giving downtown eaters several new options and offering a stable location for Anchorage's growing mobile dining scene.
The food truck hub occupies a lot at K Street and Eighth Avenue. Business owner Darrin Huycke said the lot will host a constantly changing variety of food trucks Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through mid-August, at least. He's operating the site on the city-owned land -- it used to be a parking lot -- through an agreement with Anchorage Community Development Authority.
Huycke said the location is great because it's in a part of downtown without a lot of other dining options in the immediate vicinity. He said the lot can host 10 trucks and five carts or pop-up trailers, and his goal is to keep a diverse mix of food choices.
"If you sit here and look at what we got today, we got barbecue, tacos, waffles, coffee, burritos, sandwiches and cupcakes," he said.
The spot also features covered seating, with a 20-by-30-foot tent covering picnic tables at the center of the lot.
Mayor Ethan Berkowitz, who was on hand for the grand opening, said it's a welcome addition to downtown Anchorage. Berkowitz said he had a fry-bread taco, a rockfish taco and a red velvet cake truffle while he was there.
"I look at this as a way of enhancing some of the assets that the city has," he said. "And it's about good food, and good food is always appreciated."
