A Veterans and Remembrance Day Ceremony was held Tuesday at the Alaska National Guard armory on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, followed by a Canadian Forces ceremony at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Veterans were also honored at Tyson Elementary School. Youngsters greeted visitors with flags and Buddy Poppies, sang songs for the branches of service, learned the history of Veterans Day, viewed a slideshow of veterans among Tyson staff and parents, and observed a moment of silence as "Taps" was played.

A variety of events were held in Anchorage and Mat-Su throughout the day while most federal, state and local government offices and agencies were shuttered in honor of veterans.
