Legion baseball: Semifinals set for BP Invitational

Pool play concluded at the BP Invitational on Saturday with Kenai, Service Tennessee and Hawaii grabbing wins and moving into Sunday's semifinals in the 22nd rendition of the Legion baseball tournament at Mulcahy Stadium.

Tennessee and Kenai secured the No. 1 seeds in their brackets.

Tennessee won the tournament in 2014 and 2012 and has never lost a game in Alaska.

Play starts at 9:15 a.m. with a loser's bracket game. The championship is set for 7:30 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium.

Kenai 8, Chugiak 6

A five-run second inning was the difference in Kenai's 8-6 win over Chugiak.

The Twins never trailed.

After going three-up, three-down in the first inning, all nine Kenai batters came to the plate in the second inning. Paul Steffensen and JJ Sonnen led the Twins with two RBIs apiece in the inning.

Charlie Bucolo registered a solo home run in the fifth inning for Chugiak.

The win secured Kenai the No. 1 seed in Pool B.

Service 14, Dimond 3

Ronan Klancher walloped a two-RBI triple in the to put an exclamation point on Service's 14-3 win over Dimond.

The win secured Service the No. 2 seed in Pool A and a spot in Sunday's semifinals.

Klancher, the Cougars' leadoff man, had three runs and three hits. Derek Scoggins, Nick Hall and Mike Yandell each scored twice for Service.

Dimond tallied runs from Jesse Boese, Sean Carey and Kyle Henrickson.

Tennessee 7, Dimond 0

Boone Sweeney drove in three runs and Scott Lentz drove in two to fuel Tennessee's 7-0 romp over Dimond.

Billy Thurman and Dylan Home combined for a two-hitter for the winners. They struck out five.

Dylan Montagna and Sean Carey touched Thurman, who pitched five innings, for Dimond's only hits.

Tennessee 13, West 1

Devin Symler had a big day at the plate in Tennessee's 13-1 rout of West.

He racked up seven RBIs on three hits, including a double and a triple, to help his team finish undefeated in tournament pool play.

Tennessee scored in bunches — five runs in the second inning, seven in the fifth.

West's lone run came in the sixth inning on a Mitch Goudreau RBI single.

Hawaii 3, South 2

Hawaii scored all of its runs in the fifth inning to rally past South 3-2. Two of its three runs were unearned.

South led 1-0 before Hawaii's outburst. The Wolverines got RBI singles from Tommy Koloski and Hunter Johnson.
