Cyclists Berberich, Grande capture titles in Fireweed’s most brutal event

Three riders finished the most daunting race — about 400 miles from Sheep Mountain to Valdez and back — in the 15th Fireweed last weekend, when Anthony Berberich and Christina Grande earned the men's and women's victories, respectively.

Berberich clocked 24 hours, 20 minutes, 24 seconds, for the time-trial grind that is measured at 386 miles but rounded up to 400 because, well, it's a nice round number, so why nitpick? Grande made the journey in 32:45.33.

The other 400 finisher was Ben Lefevers in 27:17:45.

More than 300 racers competed in timed divisions, and in solo and relay categories. The Fireweed also includes untimed rides.

Ana Jager captured the women's title in the 200-mile time trial (actually 192 miles) from Sheep Mountain to Valdez in 13:17:31 and Jared Green earned the men's title in 9:23:09.

Teresa Ulrich won the women's 100-mile (actually 97 miles) on an out-and-back course in 6:40:36 to edge Katy Nicholas by 12 seconds. Shane Jolin took the men's title in 4:31:44.

Stacey Kolstad clocked 2:15:06 to win the women's 50-miler (44.4 miles) on the out-and-back course and Dan McCarthy clocked 2:43:53 to win the men's title by 12 seconds over Rick Fouts.
