Greg Sanders wins Alaska match play title on 1st playoff hole

Greg Sanders beat Adam Baxter on the first hole of a playoff to capture the Alaska state match play golf championship Sunday at Settlers Bay.

According to a tournament recap by the Alaska Golf Blog, Sanders sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole in regulation play to force the playoff.

The championship was decided on the No. 1 hole. Sanders was on the green in two shots but Baxter wound up in the trees and finished with a double bogey.

The three-day tournament, organized by the Alaska Golf Association, attracted about 100 players.

In semifinal play, Sanders defeated Craig Burnham and Baxter downed Briano Molinaro.

In qualifying stroke play, Tim Ruf led the way with a 69, followed by Baxter (71), Molinaro (72) and Sanders (73).

The senior match-play title went to Benji Sumulong, who defeated Mark McMahon in the finals. In the semifinals, Sumulong dispatched Rick Boyles and McMahan beat Gary Murdock.

In women's stroke play, Connie Rummel fired an 81, followed by Kelly Hollister (82) and Halcyon Swisher (83). The women didn't compete in match play.
