The Pilots and Bucs are locked in a four-way tie for first place with the Fairbanks Goldpanners and Mat-Su Miners.

Sandbrink struck out three and allowed three hits as the Pilots improved to 2-0 against the Bucs.

Travis Kelly pitched three innings to earn the save.

Tony Asaro and Joseph Terdoslavich each contributed RBI singles for the Glacier Pilots.

Marti Mullins went 2 for 3 for the Bucs, scored one of their runs and drove in the other.

Panners 9, Miners 2

Ryan Scoma went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs Saturday night to spearhead the Fairbanks Goldpanners' ABL win over the visiting Mat-Su Miners at Growden Park in Fairbanks.

Ryan Heroy and Jake Dunning each drove in two runs for the Panners.

Thomas Myers contributed a solo home run.

All that offense supported starter Matt Newman, who allowed three hits and struck out six in seven innings.

The Panners are 8-4 overall and have won three of their last four games.

Miners hit the road for Fairbanks triip

By the time Friday's forgettable game for the Mat-Su Miners ended against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, the clouds had moved in and it was raining. Players left Hermon Brothers Field with heads down.

Two staples in the Miners' early season success -- defense and pitching -- were missing in Mat-Su's 6-2 loss to the Pilots.

The Mat-Su pitching staff gave up 10 hits and the defense committed two errors, both of which resulted in runs.

Kyle Jensen's opposite field solo home run over the right field fence was the lone bright spot for the Miners, who entered the game leading in the Alaska Baseball League standings by a half game.

A disastrous seventh inning for Mat-Su put the Pilots ahead for good. Joseph Terdoslavich hit an RBI double and later scored when Miners catcher Steve Domecus wildly threw a pick-off attempt past second base. Domecus's throw sailed into the outfield, allowing Terdoslavich to trot home.

Quite the opposite happened in the seventh inning of Thursday's game between the Pilots and Miners.

Mat-Su hit three home runs in the seventh and racked up 10 runs to win 13-8 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Ty Rasmussen hit a grand slam and a two-run shot to finish with six RBIs, all in the seventh. Jordin Hood also hit a solo homer as the Miners ran through 15 batters in the inning.

The burst of offense was quite unexpected -- the Miners entered the game hitting .187 as a team.

Mat-Su played the Alaska Goldpanners in Fairbanks on Saturday. The Miners play their next seven games in Fairbanks against the Panners and Athletes in Action.

Mat-Su returns home July 5 to face the Taiwan national team.
