Pilots cool Oilers with 1-0 victory

One run was all the Anchorage Glacier Pilots needed Saturday to snap the Peninsula Oilers' nine-game winning streak and earn a 1-0 Alaska Baseball League road victory at Seymour Memorial Park.

Story tools

The Pilots, who snapped their three-game losing skid, also got a pitching gem from right-hander Javier Martinez.

The Fordham junior tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits. His control was key; he walked only two.

Vanderbilt right-hander Casey Weathers pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save.

The Pilots scored their run in the fourth inning. After that, the Oilers pitching staff retired 16 straight Pilots.

The Pilots and Oilers end their two-game series 2 p.m. today at Seymour Memorial Park.

Panners 9, Bucs 1

Fairbanks starter Chris Schwinden pitched eight flawless innings and his teammates pounded Anchorage pitching Saturday to lead the Goldpanners over the visiting Bucs 9-1 at Growden Memorial Park.

Schwinden, a right-handed sophomore from Fresno, Calif., threw eight scoreless innings and gave up five hits. He walked three and struck out two.

The Panners had 13 hits and eight of their nine starters notched at least one.

Lead-off hitter Mark Thompson went 2 for 3, including a two-RBI triple in the fourth that put Fairbanks ahead 4-0.

Bucs starter Lin-Po You gave up four runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.

The Bucs have today off and will resume play Monday night at Mulcahy Stadium against the Peninsula Oilers.

Miners 8, AIA 0

The Mat-Su Miners defeated the visiting Athletes In Action 8-0 Saturday at Hermon Brothers Field to take sole possession of first place in the ABL.

David Gruener, a 6-foot-3 Notre Dame sophomore, led the way for the Miners. The southpaw pitched seven strong innings and struck out five.

Daniel Magness provided Mat-Su with an offensive spark. The San Diego junior went 2 for 5 and drove in three runs.

The Miners have a two-day break before meeting the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Tuesday at Mulcahy Stadium. AIA faces the Fairbanks Goldpanners today in Fairbanks. ABL STANDINGS
