Peninsula's lights out closer Paul Smyth got Eric Wetzel to ground out with a runner in scoring position to end the Anchorage Bucs' thoughts of a ninth-inning rally Thursday evening at Mulcahy Stadium.

Jared Gayhart singled to right off Smyth with two outs. Then he advanced to second base on a wild pitch.

But Smyth, a side-arm right hander for Kansas, earned his fifth save when Wetzel grounded out on a full-count pitch. Smyth came into the game with a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings.

Toby Davis' 2-for-2 performance with two RBIs and one run led the third-place Oilers.

Anchorage starter Christian Bergman tossed all nine innings -- the first complete game for the Bucs this season. He gave up four runs (only two were earned), struck out five batters and dropped to 1-3.

Wetzel went 2 for 5 to lead the last-place Bucs.

Panners 8, Miners 7

Fairbanks scored in the bottom of the 11th to defeat Mat-Su late Thursday at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

The Panners tied the scored in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman Sean Bard singled. Pinch runner Sequoyah Stonecipher stole second, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, then scored on an error.

James Ewing and Carl Uhl each went 3 for 5 and combined for five of the Miners' RBIs.
