Glacier Pilots secure the Mayor's Cup

Given up for dead, the Anchorage Bucs rallied from a five-run deficit with a spirited late-game rally to force extra innings.

Story tools

Only to give the runs right back.

The Anchorage Glacier Pilots plated four runs in the top of the 10th inning Saturday night to grab a 10-6 victory in the second game of the three-game Mayor's Cup series at Mulcahy Stadium.

With the win, the Pilots clinched their second straight Mayor's Cup title under manager Chris Jones. The Pilots won the first game of the series 8-0 on Friday.

Game three is tonight at 7.

Trailing 6-1, the Bucs started the comeback with three runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth.

In the eighth, the Bucs got an RBI double by Kyle Morgan, a sac fly by Clay Calfee and a run-scoring single by Gabe Jacobo to pull within 6-4.

In the ninth, Calfee and Louis Ullrich each delivered two-out RBIs to tie the game.

But it could have been worse for the Pilots.

Ullrich tried scoring the winning run on Tom Mendonca's single but was thrown out at home to force extra innings.

In the 10th, Mike Diaz broke the deadlock with an infield single with the bases loaded. From there, the Pilots scored three more runs off an error and wild pitch.

Slow starters, the Bucs didn't score their first run until the seventh -- their first in more than 15 innings of this year's Mayor's Cup -- when Buck Afenir lined a two-out RBI single.

Not only was it the first run for the Bucs in this series, it snapped a string of 24 consecutive scoreless innings for the Pilots pitching staff. That broke the previous record of 23 set most recently during the 2003 season.

The Pilots had gone ahead 6-1 on an RBI infield single from Diaz in the seventh and a sacrifice fly from Ben Soignier and a two-run single from Bernard Williams in the eighth.
