Bucs combine to one-hit Miners

The Anchorage Bucs' Mitch Bialosky took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his first start of the Alaska Baseball League season Wednesday night, but poor infield defense got him a no-decision in a 2-1 win over the Mat-Su Miners at Mulcahy Stadium.

Story tools

Four Bucs pitchers combined on a one-hitter.

After blowing a 1-0 lead in the seventh, the Bucs rallied in the bottom half of the inning on Tom Mendonca's solo blast. Anchorage held on through trouble in the eighth and Adam Jorgenson got the final five outs for the save.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Bucs and a four-game winning streak for the Miners, who are now two games behind the league-leading AIA Fire.

Mat-Su's Joey August broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh and scored the tying run on a throwing error that would have ended the frame and given Bialosky a chance to get the win.

Instead, Bialosky was lifted with two outs and did not factor into the decision. He struck out eight, walked three, allowed just the one hit and the unearned run.

Mat-Su put the tying run at second with two outs in the ninth on yet another error. After walking Carl Uhl, Jorgenson rallied to strike out Ben Price to end it.

Panners 7, Pilots 3

Reliever Brad Schwarzenbach worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the eighth inning Wednesday night to help lift the Fairbanks Goldpanners to a 7-3 Alaska Baseball League win over the visiting Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Growden Park.

Trailing 4-3 in the top of the eighth, the Pilots blew an opportunity. With Pilots on second and third bases, Fairbanks reliever Jarred Holloway induced Danny Cox to pop up. Then Schwarzenbach came in and fanned Ben Soignier and Luke Yoder to end the inning.

The Goldpanners immediately responded in the bottom of the eighth, when Paul Martin's two-run home run and Troy Hamilton's sacrifice fly earned them a 7-3 lead.

Anchorage owned a 3-1 lead halfway through the game, courtesy in part to a third-inning rally that included Matt Diaz's RBI triple and Todd Sebek's RBI single. But the Goldpanners rallied for three sixth-inning runs on RBI singles from Matt Vogel, Dane Ponciano and Matt Dempsey.
