Four first-time champs crowned in Resurrection Pass ultramarathons

Four first-time champions were crowned over the weekend in one of Alaska's most difficult trail ultramarathons.

Dugan Greenwell won the overall title in the Resurrection Pass 100, which takes runners from Hope to Cooper Landing and back. He clocked 18 hours, 57 minutes, 40 seconds, to beat Houston Laws (21:47:40) by nearly three hours.

Coupled with his 2012 victory in the Resurrection Pass 50, Greenwell became the third athlete in race history to bag victories in both the 50 and the 100. The 50 has been run since 1996 and the 100 debuted in 2003.

Shawn McTaggert, runner-up to race legend Laura McDonough in the 100 last year, claimed her first Resurrection 100 title, clocking 22:01:36 to finish more than an hour clear of runner-up McDonough (23:17.25).

McDonough owns the most titles in race history with nine. She has won the women's division of the 100 seven times, including last year, when she also seized the overall title, and has won the 50 twice.

Geoff Roes of Juneau, who a few years ago was the nation's top ultramarathoner, won the 100 in 2008 and the 50 in 2007. Jeff Ardnt won the 100 in 2007 and the 50 in 1999.

Allan Spangler won the overall title in the 50 in 6:22:03, edging A.J. Shirack (6:28:10).
