Less than a year after a 17-game losing streak, Bartlett is ranked No. 1

Bartlett High, less than a year removed from a 17-game losing streak, is the state's top-ranked large-school football team in the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network's latest poll.

The Golden Bears (3-0) of the Cook Inlet Conference, who have won six consecutive games dating back to last season and last Saturday beat Chugiak 31-20, supplanted South of the CIC at No. 1. South (2-1), which fell 43-0 at Texas power Stephenville on Saturday, slipped to No. 3.

Colony (3-0) of the Railbelt Conference moved up two spots to No. 2 after beating Juneau, 48-0.

Dimond (2-1) of the CIC moved up one spot to No. 4 after its 29-7 nonconference win over West Valley. West (2-1) of the CIC, which was ranked No. 1 two weeks ago but fell out of the poll after losing to Dimond, returned to the rankings at No. 5 after beating Service, 23-20. Service (2-1), ranked No. 3 last week, fell out of the poll.

Bartlett entertains Service on Saturday.

Defending medium-school state champion Soldotna (3-0) remained No. 1 in the poll for medium-small schools following its 62-0 win over Thunder Mountain.

Eielson (3-0) and Nikiski (3-0) each moved up one spot to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, and clash Saturday at Nikiski.

North Pole (2-1) slipped two spots to No. 4 after a 54-49 loss at Palmer, a large school. Ketchikan (2-1), which last weekend beat Seward 61-30, moved into the rankings at No. 5.
