Penker's PRs lead UAA gymnastics team in Chicago

Simone Penker posted two career-bests and she and teammate M'rcy Matsunami both finished in the top five in the all-around Friday to lead the UAA gymnastics team at the four-team Navy Pier Invitational meet in Chicago.

Penker, a senior, scored career-highs of 9.775 on balance beam and 9.725 on vault while finishing fourth in the all-around competition with 38.5 points. Matsunami, also a senior, was fifth in the all-around with 38.0 points.

Matsunami had UAA's highest score on any apparatus, placing fourth in floor exercise with a 9.8.

Penker earned a share of fifth place in the beam and led the Seawolves on the uneven parallel bars by placing 13th with a 9.625.

Three Seawolves tied for 10th place in vault — Matsunami, Morgan Ross and Morgan Colee, who all scored 9.75. The marks were personal-bests for Ross and Colee. Penker's PR placed her 13th in vault.

As a team, UAA finished fourth with 190.375 points, placing behind Central Michigan (195.125), Northern Illinois (194.200) and Temple (192.325).
