UAA freshman skis to 2nd place in West Region women's slalom

UAA freshman Maria Gudmundsdottir grabbed second place in the women's slalom race to lead the Seawolves on the final day of the Western Region championships Saturday in Colorado.

Sean Alexander, the senior who won Friday's giant slalom, followed up with a seventh-place finish in the men's slalom on the Beaver Creek slopes. It was Alexander's sixth top-10 finish of the season.

In cross-country competition in Minturn, UAA freshman Luca Winkler claimed fourth place in the men's 20-kilometer classic-technique race for the best result of his season.

Also posting top-15 nordic results for the Seawolves were senior Etienne Richard, who was 11th in the men's race, and sophomore Casey Wright, who was 14th in the women's 15-K. UAA senior Mackenzie Kanady placed 18th among women, the first time this season she didn't place in the top 13.

UAA placed sixth in the team standings with 449 points, 24 out of fifth place. Utah won the meet with 662.
