UAA gymnasts tie school record on balance beam

The UAA gymnastics team put on a good balancing act Sunday at UC Davis.

The Seawolves posted a team score in the balance beam that equaled the school record in a dual meet with the Aggies in Davis, California.

Led by scores of 9.775 registered by both Simone Penker and Julia York, UAA racked up 48.65 points on the beam. That tied the school record established a year ago.

Also contributing to the record score were M'Rcy Matsunami with a 9.75 and Kaylin Mancari and Brice Mizell with matching 9.675s.

Matsunami, who led UAA on uneven parallel bars with a 9.75, finished with 38.85 points in the all-around. Penker, who delivered a team-high 9.725 in floor exercise, totaled 38.6.

Marie-Sophie Boggasch's 9.75 led UAA on vault.

UC Davis, led by a 9.9 from floor exercise champion Yasmine Yektaparest, beat UAA 195.225 to 192.250.

The Seawolves return to action in two weeks when they host Air Force in a pair of dual meets at the Alaska Airlines Center on March 11 and March 13.
