Seawolves honored for academics
Five UAA track athletes -- Mick Boyle, David Kipligat, James Pettigrew, Demietrius Preston and Shaun Ward -- were named to the 2009 Men's Division II All-Academic Track and Field team, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
The championship Western Washington women's rowing team that was sprinkled with Alaska athletes will be among the champions featured 10 a.m. Saturday on the 2009 NCAA Championships Spring Highlight Show. It airs on CBS affiliate KTVA-TV, Channel 11 in Anchorage.

Canadian joins UAA alpine team
Cameron Brewington of Calgary, Alberta, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to join UAA's alpine ski team, coach Trond Flagstad announced Monday.
BASKETBALL
Former UAA player Jeremiah Trueman signed a professional contract with the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League, the club recently announced.
Registe takes 14th in long jump
David Registe of Palmer broke the 25-foot mark for the third time this season to finish in the middle of the pack in the long jump Saturday at the U.S. Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

The UAF women's basketball team, coming off a horrible season in which the Nanooks lost almost as many players as they did games, dipped into the high school coaching pool to replace Darryl Smith, who is gone after one season.

UAA's hockey team is likely to get two new conference rivals in a year or two, and whether one of them is the Nanooks from up north will depend largely on a straw vote league members will take next week.
