The Nanooks charged back on the second day of skiing in the fifth annual Alaska Nordic Cup cross-country ski series between the state's two NCAA ski teams Sunday in Fairbanks.

The UAF women finished 2-3-4 in the 5-kilometer classical race to erase the lead UAA grabbed in Saturday's freestyle race. The Nanooks outscored UAA 23-19 in the two races.

The UAF men, led by winner Oyvind Watterdal, completely wiped out the Seawolves men's healthy nine-point, first-day lead to forge a 21-21 tie. That, combined with the women's score, gave the Nanooks a 44-40 team victory and possession of the Cup for the second straight year.

The Nanooks won even though the best performance by one of their athletes didn't count in the team standings. Aurelia Korthauer, a redshirt from Germany, won the women's race in 15 minutes, 47.5 seconds and enjoyed a huge lead over teammate and runnerup Julie Pierson (16:27.9).

UAA's top finisher was fifth-place Jaime Bronga (16:59.6).

Watterdal topped the men in 28:30.1, shading Andrew Dougherty of the Alaska Winter Stars by eight seconds. Max Treinen finished fifth in 28:54 to lead the Seawolves.
