Portland State won a Pacific Northwest showdown with Seattle University to capture third place Saturday at the Great Alaska Shootout.
The Vikings built a huge first-half lead to coast to an 81-67 win. Four players hit double figures, including Jamie Jones, a 6-foot-7 junior who had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Jones had 10 of his points in the first half as Portland State rolled to a 40-21 lead. Seattle chipped away at the lead in the second half but never came closer than 11 points.
Dominic Waters led all scorers with 22 points for Portland State, which hit 50.8 percent of its shots to improve to 5-1. Seattle University, playing its first season as an NCAA Division I team, dropped to 4-3.
Both teams have ties with UAA. Portland State is coached by Ken Bone, who for many years coached against the Seawolves as the head coach at Seattle Pacific, and Seattle played in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the Seawolves for several years until making the jump to D-I this season.
